Hebrews 10:25- “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”

We will travel farther when we travel together collectively.

Fellowship is a habit that should be cultivated by Christians for Christian growth. A few years back, around 2011, the City of Ibadan got flooded and most of the bridges were swept like a magic carpet across the turbulence. Water flooded the streets and many people had to walk in the flood to reach their homes. People formed large clusters and held hands to cross the road. Everyone held on tightly to one another. If anyone let go, they would be swept away. Fellowship brings togetherness.

When we grow as Christians in this world, staying together and hanging on together is for our benefit. We are not perfect, but together we can do more. We are the body of Christ. It’s just like parts of our body. The leg needs the eyes to see where it is going and the brain needs the eyes to interpret directions. Arms, legs, hands, heart, brain and every other part of our body work together for growth. If I’m the arm, you could be the legs, and you need me to wear your shoes. When we fellowship together we become the body of Christ for His glory.

What are the benefits of fellowshipping?

Why did the Bible say do not forsake the assembly of brethren?

  • Together we are stronger: Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. It doesn’t matter what your level of maturity is in Christianity, we need each other to grow in faith. When we are together, we will give each other the strength for this growth.
  • Together we are encouraged: There comes a time in one’s life that one faces challenges, and it is during this time that we need brothers the most to provide encouraging words for support. Challenges can always take our eyes off of God, but when there are people around us that are willing to carry the burden for us or provide a shoulder to cry on. You know how you feel when you let out your heavy heart to someone and they just hold you and pat your back for some minutes. Romans 15:1-2 We who are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.
  • Together we grow: The church is a place of fellowship. When we come to the house of God, what we do is listen to God’s word from a minister, read affirmations from the scripture, and pray together and for one another. We worship and give thanks. All these edify our spiritual life and make us grow more and more in the Christian journey. Acts 2:46–47 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who should be saved.
  • Together we are united: It is like this, we cannot use one broomstick to clean a room, but a bunch can do the job. When we stay together in fellowship, we are reminded that we are not alone in this world. It brings a feeling of calmness and control to our souls. We build relationships among ourselves and become the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:21. – “The eye can never say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you.’ The head can’t say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you.”

So, fellowship is sweet companionship. We need each other just like the pride of lions or a park of wolves. Psalms 55:14- We took sweet counsel together, and walked to the house of God in company.
