There is peace and contentment in serving the Lord. Amen?’
The Church of the Lord is like a vineyard or a garden that needs to be dressed. When we commit to dressing the vineyard, then we begin to live a life of service. Service needs commitment.
You see, volunteering as labourers in God’s vineyard is not easy, but it’s like an investment, it pays. However, this doesn’t mean that we should volunteer because of the returns. He pays regardless. Hebrews 6:10- “For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.”
What does it mean to cultivate the habit of serving God?
Let’s break it down
A life of service to God comprises sacrificing our time, treasure, and talent to others. Others? Yeah, others. When we serve others, we are sharing love, and since God is love, we are living a life of service.
We can live a life of service to God by donating to the needy and the less fortunate. It could be material things, such as clothing items or money. Proverbs 19:17 –“Those who are gracious to the poor lend to the Lord, and the Lord will fully repay them.”
Another means to render service is by being a friend. You don’t know how deep “How are you?” can be. Imagine you’re going through some rough patch and someone you know walks up to you to say “Hi what’s up? How are you?” and you’re like, “Mehn guyyyy” Friendship is a way we can serve God, the love you have just shown to a person is what God is. Who doesn’t love to be befriended?
Next up is, using our talent to serve God. But how? Yes, maybe you know one or two things about technical stuff and you see that the church needs a technical team. Stepping in at that time is serving God with talent. What talent do you have? Can you maybe la la la la la, join the choir. If you love kids, join the children’s department.
Lastly, serving God with your time is devoting our time to the propagation of the gospel. Some volunteer for missionary work for these reasons, although not everyone can be a missionary. The point is to develop a way to serve God. It starts with serving our neighbors.
1 Peter 4:10-11. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.”
One song resonates within me as I write this and it is:
It pays to serve Jesus, I speak from my heart,
He’ll always be with us, if we do our part
There’s naught in this wide world can pleasure afford;
There’s peace and contentment in serving the Lord.
