Caught in the crossfire of supremacy battles among members of different generations are issues around music and style of delivery. Silent disco, however, has maintained its pride of place as it has remained relevant year after year.

What is a Silent Disco?

A silent disco is a party where everyone wears wireless headphones connected to the same or different channels so they can all hear the music simultaneously.

Many would argue that “silent disco” is, perhaps, the most millennial thing ever. Gen Zs may, however, beg to differ considering the recent buzz about safe environments in the media – which is one of the key selling points of silent discos.

The invention of silent disco dates back to the 1990’s, where it was used by eco-activists to minimise noise pollution even as they got groovy. However, this concept became more mainstream in the 2000’s.

Since getting mainstream, it has become an avenue for music lovers, who prefer it noiseless, to party without the fear (of intruding neighbours or law enforcement agents) and get an immersive listening experience from DJ’s or live bands.

How Silent Disco Works

It uses professional-grade headphones or stereo earbuds with no sound coming from the source itself, connected via FM transmitters, bluetooth or other receivers. Silent discos do not use any external speakers to playback recorded audio for audience members, hence the word “silent.”

To prevent outside noise from entering and disturbing others close, everyone attending will be wearing these particular headphones for the silent dance party.

Typically, silent discos have many channels accessible, allowing hosts or promoters to select the channel they want their guests to listen to, or to provide codes in advance if they want people to bring their own headphones.

This means that even while several songs may be playing simultaneously, no two individuals will necessarily be able to hear what is going on around them until later, when all the songs start to overlap, depending on your desire, producing a complete sound experience!

Four Golden Don’ts of a Silent Disco

If you must attend a silent disco, you definitely do not want to be the odd one out. This is why it is important to learn the standard etiquettes for this social gathering.

●  Avoid wearing footwears with a firm sole since the vibrations they create might occasionally obstruct the sound of music being played over wireless headphones. If you plan on going to Silent Disco with any, it’s advisable to take them off so everyone else can enjoy the music.

●  It is improper to bring your own portable speakers to a quiet disco. There’s a reason it is called a silent disco.

●  Respect the rights of other individuals around who are listening to the music that is being played, by not yelling or fighting. You are there to have fun, and fun only, you should have.

●  Unless specifically indicated differently when purchasing tickets, do not bring alcohol into silent discos.

I know these concepts may sound a little weird, especially if you have not been lucky to attend any silent disco yet. If that is you, you are lucky. You do not have to be curious for much longer as you can find answers to all the questions you have, this weekend at Sound Activ3’s silent disco.
