What happens when love meets a wall it can’t climb? For Segun and Sekinah, it wasn’t distance, cheating, or even bad timing that ended their relationship. It was something much bigger: faith. Three years after their quiet breakup, Segun still finds himself stuck in the same memory loop—asking whether love was ever meant to win in their story.

When does it end? When does heartbreak finally let go? A year? Two? Or does it never truly leave?

Segun still doesn’t know. It’s been three years since he and Sekinah parted ways. Yet, on random Saturday mornings – like today – he finds himself thinking about her like it just happened.

They met on campus through a civic event. Nothing deep at first – just conversations, arguments, the kind of heated banter only two bookworms could enjoy. They debated Chinua Achebe vs. Christopher Okigbo, Sefi Atta vs. Chimamanda. They connected in a way that went beyond attraction.

But then came the kiss. The kind that shifted everything. One visit turned into hours of unplanned closeness. The night fell. So did their defences. Passion ran wild, but they didn’t cross that line. Still, it was enough to bind them.

Soon, everyone around them could see it – these two were locked in. People asked if they’d get married. They never answered.

Then came Segun’s graduation, and with it, the question they’d been avoiding: what happens next?

She was Muslim. He was Christian. Devout on both sides. Neither was ready to convert. And if they were being honest, neither wanted to. Their families wouldn’t accept it. Their faiths wouldn’t allow it. So they let go. They called it mutual. Yet, it was anything but painless.

Two years later, she got married – to a man who shared her beliefs. Segun found out through a WhatsApp status update. He didn’t cry. He just stared.

But today something feels heavier. He felt a different kind of ache. He’s back in that place, wondering if he should’ve fought harder. He wished he could turn back time and damn every rationality that had confronted him then, and still went ahead to marry her.
